Dr. Timothy Elston, Program Director for the program in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (BCB), has spearheaded the effort to establish the PhD program to provide students with the specialized, cross-disciplinary training needed to solve increasingly complex quantitative biological and biochemical questions. The program will encompass research from more than twelve departments and will be administered through the Center for Genome Sciences. Dr. Elston presented the formal request to establish the PhD program to representatives from all of the state universities on Oct. 25, 2007. It has been enthusiastically received and formal approval is expected from the UNC Board of Governors in the coming weeks. The BCB program is anticipating the enrollment of its first class of PhD candidates in fall 2008.
