As director of UNC-Chapel Hill’s newly awarded Center for Genomics and Society (CGS), Gail Henderson was invited to speak on the program “Radio In Vivo” which is broadcast out of Carrboro and invites scientists from the area to discuss their research interests with the local community. Her hour-long interview with Ernie Hood centered on the Ethical, Legal, and Social Implication (ELSI) issues surrounding large scale genomic studies, which is the primary focus of the Center and their NHGRI grant. The show highlighted the need for public education and outreach as more complex genetic information and analysis is disseminated to the general public. Gail touched on some key activities in the center including the risks and implications for patients involved in pharmacogenomics/personalized therapy studies, joining a large genetic registry, involvement in large scale genome wide association studies, and the educational and ethical issues surrounding newborn genetic screening.
