Greg Hogan, who graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2005 with a BS degree in biology, was awarded a prestigious Fulbright student grant for study abroad during the 2006-2007 academic year. Hogan completed his senior thesis project under the mentorship of Jason Lieb, CCGS faculty member and assistant professor of biology. The Fulbright program was established in 1946 by the US State Department for international educational exchange. Grants are awarded in a broad range of subject areas for the principal purpose of fostering mutual understanding between the US and more than 150 foreign countries. Hogan’s project, entitled “Examining the Global Heterochromatin Landscape,” will be conducted under Dr. Bas van Steensel at the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam. In his proposal, Hogan outlined two specific aims for better understanding heterochromatin composition and function in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. Following his year abroad, he will be attending graduate school at the University of California at San Francisco. |
