April 26, 2005 The National Academies has released formal guidelines for research involving human embryonic stem cells in order to address scientific and ethical concerns that such research has raised. "The guidelines are intended to enhance the integrity of privately funded human embryonic stem cell research by encouraging responsible practices," according to a press release issued by the National Academies. A committee appointed jointly by the National Research Council and the Institute of Medicine authored the guidelines. The committee is comprised of experts in bioethics, law, and biomedical research, including CCGS Director Terry Magnuson.
