Barbra Bluestone Rothschild, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Social Medicine at UNC-CH School or Medicine. Dr. Rothschild is an internist with a research interest in human subjects research ethics and in community engagement. She attended Medical School at UNC-CH and completed one year of an obstetrics/gynecology residency and three years of an internal medicine residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. She has been writing on medical ethics and research ethics since medical school. Dr. Rothchild received a two-year grant from the Greenwall Foundation to examine the decision-making processes of parents considering experimental maternal-fetal surgery after a diagnosis of Spina Bifida. Her other research interests, funded with support from NHGRI ELSI program, include early phase clinical trial research, and the concept of ownership of biologic samples collected for research. For the past three years, she has served on a Data Safety Monitoring Board for the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Dr. Rothschild has taught clinical and research ethics to medical students for six years, and recently has taught an elective on clinical trial research ethics to MD and MD/PhD students and has lectured on this topic to clinical research professionals. Her involvement with community outreach regarding science, research, and ethics recently resulted in a contract with NHGRI to develop a community engagement model.
