Pat Phelps

Pat Phelps, PhD, is a Fellow for the Parr Center for Ethics, a member of the Graduate Student Professional Development Committee, and is the Director of the Initiative for Maximizing Student Diversity NIH training grant. Pat directs the Training Initiative for Biological and Biomedical Sciences, DNA Day, and coordinates ethics training and quantitative skills training for biomedical graduate students. Pat received her MS in toxicology and her PhD in physiology at North Carolina State University. She began her career as a biologist at the EPA where she investigated the reproductive impact of heavy metals on the steroid pathway. Pat then joined Embrex Inc., a small start-up company in Research Triangle Park, as a Research and Development Scientist. Pat remained at Embrex for 18 years where she oversaw technology transfer and external collaborations and later transitioned into a position as Senior Director for New Product Development and Global Marketing. As the Director of a department comprised of 23 scientists and engineers, Pat gained extensive experience in mentoring and advising junior scientists. In 2005, Pat joined the Institute for Science Learning at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In this position, Pat assisted with professional development for the SPIRE postdoctoral program, coordinated a seminar series for eight North Carolina Historically minority serving institutions and researched issues related the under representation of minorities in STEM disciplines.
